Ms. Gadget

Nobody has ever called me the 'Gadget lady' so far, but, I have this thing for gadgets.. I like to be updated on the latest technology..

A few criteria for picking up gadgets for me would be:
1. UTILITY
2. Price
3. Do I NEED it?
4. Pros & Cons
5. Stylish (look wise)

I can say very confidently that this 'gadget updation need' runs in the family..my younger brother actually got himself a free digicam with this knowledge!!!

Whether its buying a mobile phone or a camera or a dvd player or a bike, whatever I am buying... I like to do a lot of research into it and figure out who can give me the best deal, I feel 'cheated' and 'deceieved' otherwise..

Technology really is quite amazing...at one level, the customer is 'tempted' to buy what he/she actually doesnt require..for eg. I was looking for an ipod. Now, the purpose of an ipod is to play songs (same as an mp3 player, only that this has more 'clarity' and comes in bigger memory bits). I took my younger brothers opinion and he said I should buy one with a MP4!! Now, why would you want videos on something thats designed to play songs?

If you think about it, the more the 'additional' facilities, the more it becomes unrealiable.. Cameras with mobile phones are definitely good (for their own reasons), but essentially the purpose of having a phone is to call, talk and hang up!!! Dont you think so?

Imagine if you have just 1 mobile which can play songs(in mp3 and video version), has an inbuilt camera, smooth keypad, gprs(of course!!), a voice recorder (what else), would you want to buy it? I mean, what if it conks????????? You've lost everything! You've lost your music, photos, email, downloads, everything...

When you have the option of having different gadgets with different utilities, then, why buy an all in one?? Dont you see that its another way to get more dough out of you???

P.S. - I am 'normal' again, back to writing, have moved on from poetry for the time being atleast... :D

u pessimist!!

all-in-one is the way to go...
else u'l put me out of a job! ;-)

i know i know.. am beign selfish here. you do have a valid point you know, but all-in-one devices are usually cheaper than the segregated versions put together. so they're actually saving u money.

One of those days eh? What happened with the job in Bbay?

That was quite interesting Ms. Gadget.

You know, actually, i felt something similar about camera phones, small digcams are so much cheaper and lighter now while these costly camera phones take very low quality pictures...

i beg to differ.
the new phones have tremendous camera. I just read that Samsung launched a 10 megapixel camera.
another firm has a phone camera with 10x optical zoom (if memory serves me right).
the Sony erricson walkman series now comes with upto 4 or 8 GB of memory.
if i can come across the links to where i read abt them, i'l put them here. till then take my word for it!

now all u need is the Intel Mac chips on these phones, and u'l have superb 3-d gaming capabililty on the go :-P

@zoxcleb - the intention is not to put u out of work...haha..its just to c how technology is shaping us..

@GS- mumbai is happening!! more details in person, mayb!!!!!! pune isnt so far from mumbai, now is it?? :D

@claytonia - thats what i'm talking abt!!!

@zoxcleb again -i guess thats what we dicsussing here - u get 1 or 8 GB memory, so, u tend to download and store more data..considering we r not in the usual habit of making backups of backups, storing all ur info in 1 device can become a risk..point taken tho that one device with al faclities is cheaper than the individual buy-es..

zoxcleb said...

ah.. now i see what u getting at. basically that one device contains all that is "you". and when that goes, u are pretty much lost. no pics... no phone numbers... no nothing.
which is why it is good to introduce redundancy into these things. but then never mind, only an engineer would be that meticulous!

u in bbay? cool.... great place!

That sounds super! :) So you are taking it up ;) Welcome to my part of the world!

@zoxcleb- methinks tts not abt being meticulous..taking backups is a way of reducing risks, and that I think engineers r good at..

@ramu - ummm...if I had a laptop with a hiresolution camera-phone with music (which r in the market now) or a simple mp3 player, I would not need the others...all I really need during travel are books & music.. :D

@GS- yup! never been to mumbai, am kinda excited and a bit nervous..but, I dont want to mull over it too much.. I can take things one at a time, and like all else in my life, everything will fall into place in Mumbai too... Yes, there is hope for us to meet up more often - which is 'zehr gut'!!!!!!!

hmmm... the mistaken notions about engineers! ;-)
if u've never been to bbay.. u'l be in for a rude shock.. we try to take outsiders for a ride as long as possible. so beware!
:-D

I was faced with a similar dilemma...I had to make a choice of buying a high end phone or buy a mp3 player.....i chose the latter :)

this topics got it pros n cons...ppl can debate on this for hrs...frankly..i prefer the opposite formula..the all in 1 thing...reduces complications atleast....but sadly..dont have the money for that kinda gadget just yet...

That sounds fantastic. Its a really crowded city and i'm personally not very fond of it. But then most ppl feel otherwise :) See you soon here then. Tschuss bis da! ;)

zoxcleb said...

anyone from otuside the city usually cant stand it. :-)
thats the speciality of the place.

@zoxcleb - Well I've heard of countless reports of ppl from within the city who cant stand it as well and these are ppl who've stayed here for more than a decade! Who can stand what is just a personal opinion after all...

@ zox, gs : coffee, toffee (on a personal level, i guess mumbai makes you feel exactly what you are - cos it bares your fears & uncertanities; but also gives you opportunities to show your talent, make a name for yourself.. guess that's y it is the city of dreams...)

appu, i dont c gadget woman using most of her gadgets - guess some are just for keeps & other for use...

i like the deliberation & research part... tells you what you are getting & at the same time what you're missing...

welcome back to the 'normal' world !!!
